BEETLEJUICE TRAILER (1988)

My Design Process for the Beetlejuice Trailer

1. Composition & Layout
When designing the Beetlejuice trailer, I wanted to capture the film’s signature blend of the eerie and the whimsical. I carefully framed each shot, using dynamic compositions to reflect the movie’s quirky, supernatural aesthetic. Negative space was used strategically to balance the chaotic energy while keeping key elements visually striking.

2. Typography & Lettering
For the typography, I chose a style that complements Beetlejuice’s playful yet gothic tone. The typeface needed to feel both theatrical and slightly unsettling. I ensured that its movement felt mischievous and lively to mimic Beetlejuice’s unpredictable nature.

3. Motion Design & Transitions
I focused on making the motion design reflect the film’s supernatural themes. Smooth but eerie transitions, like ghostly fades or playful distortions, help bring the sequence to life. I also used exaggerated easing functions to reflect the film’s offbeat humor. Morphing techniques were used to enhanced the chaotic energy that defines Beetlejuice’s world.

4. Color Theory & Contrast
The color palette was crucial in capturing Beetlejuice’s distinctive aesthetic. I leaned into darker tones with a hint of contrasting red and stark black-and-white ending pattern—to mirror the film’s visual identity. These colors not only evoke the eerie, otherworldly atmosphere but also pay homage to the film’s bold production design.

5. Lighting & Texture
To give the sequence a textured, cinematic feel, I played with lighting effects like harsh shadows and highlights, reminiscent of the film’s ghostly apparitions. Adding subtle distressed texture to help enhance the vintage, slightly surreal quality of Beetlejuice’s world. These elements contribute to a tactile, almost handcrafted aesthetic, reinforcing the film’s stop-motion and practical effects influences.

6. Storytelling & Branding
Above all, I wanted this title sequence to embody Beetlejuice’s unique brand of supernatural mischief. Every design choice—from typography to movement—was made with the film’s tone in mind. The pacing reflects its energetic, darkly comedic nature, while the visual motifs capture its ghostly charm. The end result is a title sequence that feels like a natural extension of the movie itself—bold and bizarre.

Creating this sequence was about blending fun, chaos, and a little bit of the macabre—just like Beetlejuice himself.
